Suhanov (Суханов), Alexander
Alexandrovich (1952-)
Bard, poet. Alexander
Alexandrovich Suhanov was born in 1952 in Saratov, a city
located in the heart of the Volga Region of Russia. By
occupation he is a mathematician, graduating from the
distinguished Lomonosov Univirsity in Moscow in 1974. He was
also a professor of mathematics throughout the 1970s, teaching
at the Academy of U. A. Gagarin. Since 1981 he has worked in
the labs of the MGU.
Aside from
the scientific world, which surprisingly so many bards
belonged to, Suhanov was also in love with music. He had
begun writing his own songs in 1969, claiming that the song
"Crane" was his first. He studied classical violin at school
as well, and the classical method is noticed throughout his
songs. In many ways his style is somewhat similar to that of
Alexander Dolsky, who combines the elements of classical
guitar in his compositions.
He has also
composed many songs to the works of other famous Russian
poets, including those of Annensky, Tarkovsky, Rubtsev, and
Zabolotsky. He is a member of the Union of Russian Writers
and lives in Moscow.
Suhanov
singing method is very tender, soft, and thoughtful. Unlike
the the raw elements of earlier bards of the 50s, Suhanov is
of a later generation whose works are more mellow. He has
achieved a renowned status in the bard world, however never
reached the level of a superstar like Vysotsky, Okudzhava,
Dolsky, and Dolina. He remains an active bard, who may still
gain great popularity in Russian society. He is very much
known in the Russian diaspora in the United States and Israel.
