Aigi (Айги), Gennady Nikolaevich (1934-2006)

Poet, translator. Born on August 21, 1934 in Chuvashi.  Until 1969 used the last name Lesin.  Began writing poetry in the Chuvash language, greatly influenced by such poets as Sespel and Huzangai.  In 1953 studied at the A. M. Gorky Institute of Literature.

His first book of poetry appeared in 1958 in the Chuvash language. From 1961 to 1971 worked in the Government Museum of Mayakovsky in Moscow, where he compiled bibliographies.  While working at the museum he also worked as a translator of French works into Chuvash, and in 1968 came out with a fabulous Poets of France anthology.

When Aigi met Pasternak the legendary poet urged him to write poetry in Russian.  Aigi’s Russian poems never appeared in the Soviet Union, they were mostly published abroad.  It was only 1991 that a Russian publishing house came out with his Russian poems, Here.   Since the fall of the USSR Aigi’s career has blossomed, he has been awarded many literary prizes in Russia, in Chuvashi, and in the West.

Aigi died on February 21, 2006 in Moscow.  Hi son, Alexey Aigi, is a popular musician.
