Abramov (Абрамов), Fyodor Alexandrovich (1920-1983)

Writer. Born February 28, 1920 in the village of Verkola, in the Archangelsk region.  Studied philology at the Leningrad University, however in 1941 left to participate in World War II.  In 1958 published his first novel Brothers and Sisters, which was the beginning of a cycle of novels called Pryasliny.

Pryasliny is a group of novels about the Russian family by the last name of Pryaslin, set in the village of Pekashina in Southern Russia.  The novels encompass the family’s ordeals through the days of the Second World War and into the Soviet 1970s.  The cycle was completed in 1978.

Abramov’s 1978 work Wooden Horses was set to stage by Yuri Lubimov at the Taganka Theater.

As most writers of his generation Abramov focused on issues concerning Soviet society and especially the effects the war has had on his and future generations materially and psychologically.
