Abramov (Абрамов), Yakov Vasilyevich (1858-1906)

Russian journalist, publicist, and philosopher.  Abramov is perhaps best remembered for his “theory of small deeds” – which is, in simple terms, a theory very similar to that of the Narodniki movement.  Abramov espoused the idea of going back to the people, of educating the masses, and helping the nation through the actions of small deeds.   In mid and late 1880s, Abramov’s theories were very popular – and this movement for the “theory of small deeds” was labeled abramovschina.   Through this time he was heavily invested in writing many articles and working on many publications including Russian Thought and Week.  His ideas however lost momentum in his later years, and by the 1890s he had gone out of the journalistic trade and worked on publishing books on biographies and philosophy.
